Liaison and Diversion – Tyne, Wear and Northumberland
The Liaison and Diversion service offers a range of community-based support to individuals 18 or over who have been arrested or are due to appear in court.
Our Service
Liaison and Diversion aims to support people to identify their difficulties and access services that will help them.
We’re here to help
We cover the same geographical area as Northumbria Police which includes Northumberland, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Gateshead, South Tyneside and Gateshead.
Our peer support service offers ongoing support from experienced and trained Peer Support Volunteers and the opportunity to become a peer volunteer.
All our support is tailored to the individual.
Some examples of the support we provide include:
- When you first access support from us, you will receive an initial assessment from a member of staff, who will get to know you better and identify the key areas we can support you in
- Developing strategies to reduce offending and re-offending
- Direct support at attending Court hearings, attending hospital and GP appointments
- Signposting to a range of local services offering support around mental ill health, drug and alcohol use, anger management, employment and training, debt advice and benefit advice

- People who are 18 years of age and over
- People who have come into contact with the criminal justice system
- People who live in Northumberland
- People who live in Newcastle
- People who live in North Tyneside or South Tyneside
- People who live in Gateshead
Get support
Referrals are only made by Liaison and Diversion Practitioners based in police stations and courts, who can refer individuals to our service for a period of 3-6 months.
